The idea that government only gains its legitimacy from the consent of the people is foundational to America, and was an aberration to the powers that were when our brave founders declared Independence in 1776.
In nearly every corner of the globe, this idea is still an aberration, and it’s no secret that the uniquely American values we cherish are under attack- but we can’t lose heart.
In July 1775, General George Washington wrote a letter to Major General Philip Schuyler after his troops were defeated at Fort Ticonderoga. Certainly, his words should inspire us all to continue the fight for liberty.
We should never despair, our Situation before has been unpromising and has changed for the better, so I trust, it will again. If new difficulties arise, we must only put forth New Exertions and proportion our Efforts to the exigency of the times
